United Red Storm Make Program History, Advance to Sectional Championship

The United Red Storm made program history Wednesday afternoon, taking down Brown County 5-1 in the sectional semifinals at Camp Point Central.

With the win, United improves to 30-5-2, tying last year’s squad for the most wins in program history. The Red Storm also advance to the sectional championship for the first time ever.

United came out firing in the top of the first, as Chance Stewart led off the game with a double. Ian Leffler followed later in the inning with an RBI single, scoring Stewart and giving the Red Storm an early 1-0 lead.

Brown County answered in the bottom half, as Jack Sefton drew a leadoff walk before Collin Dieterle doubled him home to tie the game at 1. Dieterle advanced to third on the throw, but Aiden Martin worked out of the no-out jam to keep the game tied.

The score stayed there until the top of the third, when Koen Sperry reached on an error to start the inning. Leffler followed with a single to move Sperry to third, before Nolan Jenks drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI ground out. One batter later, Collin Leary came through with a two-out RBI single to score Leffler, giving United a 3-1 lead.

Martin held the Hornets scoreless the rest of the way, while the Red Storm added one more run in the fifth on an RBI fielder’s choice by Leary, and another in the sixth on a Stewart single that scored Egan Marshall.

That was more than enough for Martin, who went the distance on the mound. The senior threw all seven innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run as United punched its ticket to the sectional title game with a 5-1 win.

The Red Storm will now await the winner of Abingdon-Avon and Jacksonville Routt. Saturday’s sectional championship is scheduled for 11 AM at Camp Point Central.

We will have the broadcast on WRAM AM 1330, online at radiomonmouth.com, and on our free WRAM app, with pregame coverage set for 10:45.
