A generator is a valuable source of power whenever the electricity goes out, but improper use can create dangerous situations. Kevin Young, Manager of Electric Training with Ameren Illinois, offers this guidance in powering up a generator:
“If you have a generator, make sure you have somebody licensed install that. You definitely have to have some sort of transfer switch so that you can open the main breaker of the home, so it does not back feed out to us. The next thing is, never plug an extension cord directly from a generator into an outlet in your home. That is very hazardous as well to us. The main key is having someone licensed to install it and making sure that your main breaker is open.”
Remember, never use portable generators indoors. Generators need to be placed outdoors in a dry area away from doors, windows, and vents.
