Pain experienced in the lower back may not have originated from the spine. Advanced Rehab and Sports Medicine Clinic Manager Doug Price explains the SI Joint, located where the lower spine connects with the pelvis, could be the source of the pain:

“Back pain is typically going to be around the waistline or above. The SI Joint pain is just below the belt line and people that have had this pain know because if you have ever bent over to touch your toes or pick something up, it almost gets stuck because it is not moving the way it should and you get this stabbing pain,” says Price.

“The biggest thing is tight hip flexors and weak lower abdominal that cause this. The hip flexors attach on the front part of your spine and front part of your pelvis. What do we do the majority of the day; most of us are sitting. You have to improve the flexibility of those hop flexors, but you also need to work a little core,” Price adds.

With Direct Access, Price reminds that patients can schedule an appointment with a physical therapist without a physician referral.
