The school week may end on Fridays, but the need for nutritious meals does not. Through Jamieson Community Center’s Weekend Meals program, Monmouth-Roseville students in pre-k through sixth grade receive breakfast, lunch, and dinner items that rotate weekly, reports Executive Director Nancy Mowen:
“Over the past years, we have done that in partnership with River Bend Foodbank. They are going to a school pantry model. I had a lot of discussion with counselors at Monmouth-Roseville, and they prefer the weekend meals the way that we have been doing them. We will be purchasing all the food. We will have volunteers pack up that food and we already have volunteers through Security Savings Bank that deliver to the schools,” informs Mowen.
“The nutritional value of the food that we distribute is really important. Food security means that you have access to adequate nutrition to support a healthy, active lifestyle. We want to make sure that the food we distribute has the highest nutritional value possible,” Mowen adds.
An average of 80 students are served each weekend.
