Douglas Eugene Ferreter, 71, of Galesburg, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on July 31, 2026. Born on November 9, 1954, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he was the son of Richard and Helen (Kanke) Ferreter. Doug was a graduate of Kennedy High School (1972) and the University of Iowa (1976), later earning a Master of Arts degree from Saint Xavier University in 2003.
Doug dedicated his professional life to education, serving as a middle school mathematics teacher at Churchill Junior High School. A respected cornerstone of the Churchill community, he upheld the school’s “Tradition of Excellence” and continually sought to elevate both his teaching and his students’ achievements. Known for his clarity, wit, and engaging instructional style, Doug made mathematics accessible and enjoyable. His memorable rhymes, humor, and structured classroom expectations left a lasting impact on generations of students.
Beyond the classroom, Doug contributed to numerous school activities. He sponsored Pep Club in his early years, organized student sections and fan buses, supervised intramurals, and served for many years as the boys’ basketball timekeeper. He was also a valued member of the after school Success Program, where students and staff relied on his expertise. For nearly two decades, Doug chaperoned the 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip, combining his love of travel with his commitment to fostering informed and responsible citizenship. Many may remember Doug from his part-time server positions with the Galesburg Sheraton Hotel, Jumers Continental Inn, and Barnstormers in Monmouth, Illinois.
Doug’s personal interests were wide ranging. He was passionate about railroads and railroad history, often traveling and photographing trains with his siblings. He enjoyed visiting regional casinos, attending Iowa Hawkeye football games—especially bowl games—and playing bridge with a devoted group of friends. A lifelong member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, Doug cherished travel in all forms, including cruises, road trips, and bike excursions. He was also active with the HIV/AIDS Task Force of Illinois and regularly participated in the annual AIDS Walk.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his siblings Darrell (Sandra) Ferreter of Cedar Rapids, Dennis (Grace) Ferreter of Hiawatha, Iowa, and Diane Weimer of Cedar Rapids.
