As the body ages, according to Advanced Rehab and Sports Medicine Clinic Manager Doug Price, staying active through low-impact exercise can help keep muscles healthy:
“If you can get into a low impact exercise, whether you are riding a bike or walking on a walking pad, something that has a little lower impact, you are keeping that joint moving, you are keeping that joint lubricated. That is what it needs. If it is just sitting there, the muscles are going to get weak, the muscles get stiff, but if you can just get a little bit of movement, not only are you lubricating that joint, but you are getting increased blood flow into the muscular tissue, which helps the elasticity of the tendons. It also keeps the muscles more pliable and everything a lot healthier.”
Price also reminds that a doctor’s referral is not required to schedule an appointment for physical therapy.
