Upgrades to traffic signal control patterns around the City of Monmouth are expected to improve vehicle detection and signal times at area intersections, according to Operations Director Ken Helms:
“That is actually part of a longer scope that the Illinois Department of Transportation is doing and those are the lights at 11th, 6th, and Broadway, specifically their control patterns that they have. Right now, those are controlled by an image eye that detects if somebody is in the lane. They have found that has had a lot of issues. We have experienced that as well at the Dispatch Center,” states Helms.
“They are doing work to do upgrades to make it detect that there are vehicles in the lanes. What happens is the camera eye that sits above the lanes, if the light hits it just right, it causes a glare and it may not necessarily detect that you are sitting there in your vehicle waiting to go,” Helms adds.
There is no cost to the City of Monmouth for the traffic signal light upgrades.
