Food safety starts with a few simple steps that can help protect you and your family from foodborne illnesses. During Food Safety Month, Warren County Health Department Administrator Jenna Link offers these basic principles to remember:
“There are really four basic things that we talk with people about with food safety. Obviously, step one, clean hands, clean surfaces when you are preparing food, and then making sure you are separating anything that is ready to eat versus potentially hazardous; your raw meats when you are preparing those, make sure you are keeping those separate. Make sure you are following the proper cooking temperatures. There are lots of charts out there that have all the different temperatures,” says Link.
“If you have leftovers, those really should be refrigerated within two hours and anything you take out to reheat should be brought up to a safe temperature of 165 degrees,” Link adds.
In addition, if you are preparing dishes for a group, be aware if any guests have any food allergies.
