The West Central Heat are still unbeaten after coming out on top in a wild one Friday night.
West Central improved to 5-0 with a 72-64 win over Bushnell-Prairie City in a game that featured 136 combined points.
The Heat did all of their damage on the ground, not attempting a pass in the game. Graham Kelly ran for 227 yards and a touchdown, while Aidan Garner added 228 yards and five scores.
With both teams finding the end zone all night, the difference ended up coming on two-point conversions. West Central went a perfect 9-for-9, while BPC finished 5-for-9.
Head Coach Jason Kirby says that is something the Heat put plenty of time into.
“We spend an awful lot of time, and I mean that. You’d be amazed at the amount of time that our coaches spend studying two-point conversions, and then our kids understand the importance of you got to play the next play. We talk about that all the time on defense, and if somebody scores, okay, that’s fine. The next play is enormous. If you can stop them there, then that is a huge emotional lift for you as a team, but the math on the scoreboard adds up really quickly.”
West Central will now turn their attention to the West Prairie/Southeastern Cyclones, who enter Friday night at 0-6. The Cyclones are coming off a 50-12 loss to Galva and have scored 50 points through their first six games.
The Heat will hit the road Friday night looking to improve to 6-0, with kickoff scheduled for 7 PM.
