A traditional Mexican holiday celebrated annually around the world, The Day of the Dead is a time to honor and remember deceased loved ones, a tradition the Buchanan Center for the Arts recognizes locally, shares Board Member Lydia Chavez Rogers:
“My vision in the future, is to have people come in and put up their own ofrenda, to where we have a few that are up. Then there is also the artwork that we did the first year with Nikki Ponce. The significance of it, I think everybody can relate to it in the sense of not just honoring, but remembering our loved ones that have passed. This predates back to over 3000 years, so it is something that has been happening for a long time in Mexico and Central American countries. The tradition has somehow changed and modernized in some ways, but once people got a hold of it and realized and educated themselves on what it was about, it has just continued every since and across borders. It is a worldly event that people celebrate.”
The Buchanan Center for the Arts will host a Day of the Dead celebration on Sunday, November 1st from 4 to 6 pm at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Monmouth.
