Scammers are continuing to use artificial intelligence to make their schemes sound convincing, even impersonating celebrities to scam people into sending them money, informs City of Monmouth Operations Director Ken Helms:
“It really does have quite a bit of ability for abuse. One of the things that everyone may have heard of, scammers are using voice notes from artificial intelligence from any famous figures where they have talked on the internet. They can actually impersonate, fairly well, these celebrities. What they do, is they get a hold of, specifically our elderly, and they start to try and convince them that they are talking to Elon Musk, or whoever, and Elon Musk wants to give you money; they convince the people to either send them pre-paid gift cards or Venmo or Cash App, any of these different means to transfer over money. If they start to be a little suspicious, then they can make a phone call to them and it sounds just like one of the celebrities.”
If you or a family member have been contacted by one of these scammers, or fallen victim, report it to the Monmouth Police Department immediately.
