When going through nursing school, student are often faced with a variety of cost barriers including transportation, books, application, testing, lab fees and more. Many are juggling all these costs as well as being a full time nursing student, working their jobs, and even raising families.

Carl Sandburg College Foundation has launched its 100 Extraordinary Women to try to help these nursing students focus on their studies and not as much on bills said Dean of Nursing Professions Emily Schaeffer.

“This 100 Extraordinary Women campaign asks 100 women to pledge $1,000 over a five year term. The goal is to have a sustainable foundation scholarship for students that would provide them gas cards, if they have an emergency we have a crisis grant,” said Schaeffer. “So, all of these funds go to our nursing students. It’s not for equipment, it’s not for a new building, it is 100 percent for them.”

Eric Johnson, Chief Advancement Officer added that they will be kicking off the campaign with a Nursing Open House on May 10th from 4:30 to 6:30 in Building B with speakers and a tour of the program.

“When women come together, extraordinary thing happen. In three weeks, we’ve gained $26,000 in commitments- 26 percent of our general total goal,” said Johnson.

Donations for the campaign can be made through the Carl Sandburg website or the 100 Extraordinary Women website.
