Maurice E. “Jack” Flaherty, 98, of rural Alexis, IL passed away at 9:33 am, Saturday June 3, 2023 at his home on the Cork Street Farm, which has been in his family since 1871.

He was born June 21, 1924 in Galesburg, IL the son of Arthur Joseph and Nora Marie (Bride) Flaherty. He was raised and educated in rural Alexis, graduating from Alexis High School in 1942.

Jack served with the United States Army during World War II.

Jack married Helen A. Pease in Carthage, IL on December 1, 1950 and she passed away on November 12, 1995.

Jack farmed his entire life on the family farm just south of Alexis, retiring in the mid 1970’s. He also worked at the Rock Island Arsenal as an overhead crane operator and worked as a foreman of the Alexis Crew for the Illinois Department of Transportation. He later served as the Kelly Township Road Commissioner for 7 years. 

He was a member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Alexis, IL, the Galesburg Elks Club, Monmouth American Legion, Monmouth VFW and the Warren County Democrats where he served as Chairman for several years.

Survivors include his son, Daniel (Melinda) Flaherty of Alexis and Pat (Cindy) Flaherty of Galesburg; 8 grandchildren, Ricky Peterson, Joyce (Scott McCurikan) Peterson, Debbie Peterson, Chris (Tami) Saunders, Mike (Teresa) Saunders, Jeremy (Jennifer) Flaherty, Jacque (Matthews) Schweighart and Trevor Bird; numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents, his brother Daniel Flaherty; his daughter Beverly Peterson; son, Scott Saunders; grandchildren, Jerry Peterson, Gary Saunders, William Flaherty, Erica Flaherty and Ryan Bird.

Jack will be missed by the many friends and acquaintances he made over the years. Jack’s family would like to extent their heart felt thanks to the Lane Evan Veterans Administration and the Alexis North Henderson Ambulance for all their assistance and care of Jack over the past couple of years.Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:00 am. Friday, June 9, 2023 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Alexis.  Interment will be at Alexis (St. Mary’s section) Cemetery, Alexis. Visitation will be Thursday, June 8, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, IL with a Rosary Service beginning at 4:30 pm.   Memorials may be given to the Alexis/North Henderson Ambulance Service.
