Mr. Gary L. “Vern” Glisan, 74, of Abingdon, Illinois passed away unexpectantly after a brief illness on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

Vern was born March 24, 1949, in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Elmer C. and C. Ada (Mohr) Glisan. He married Donna Kilpatrick and later Connie Brown. He found his soulmate and love of his life, Sandra McIlravy Peterson and married her on August 12, 1985, in Galesburg.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years, Sandra of Abingdon; his daughter, Brenda Gustafson of Abingdon; four brothers, Richard (Vicky) Glisan of Galesburg, Charles (Ina) Glisan of Greenbush, Illinois, Ed (the late Patsy) Glisan of Abingdon and Wayne (the late Cheryl) Glisan of Galva, Illinois; five grandchildren, Heather Warren, Amber Dwyer, Joe Gustafson, Heather Gustafson and Sarah Gustafson and fourteen great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Leon.

Vern graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1967 and later served in the US Army as a medic in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Returning home, Vern worked for the Admiral/Maytag Corporation for over thirty-two years, retiring in 1999. He also worked for Royal Cleaning for thirteen years. He was a proud member of the Abingdon American Legion Post #381.

Vern was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed farming. He truly loved his time spent with family, rather it was dining out, traveling to Branson, Missouri to take in some shows or spending time with Sandra at the casinos.

Vern’s wishes were to be cremated. A Celebration of his Life will be held from 1:00-3:00 pm Friday, November 24, 2023, at the Abingdon American Legion Post #381. Military Honors will be presented at 1:00 pm. Memorials may be made in Vern’s name to either the Wounded Warrior Project or the Abingdon American Legion Honor Guard. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be offered at www.h-p-w.com
