The Department of Energy has made a change in the refrigerant with air conditioner systems to focus on ozone depletion, explains IHC Heating and Cooling Owner and Operator Justin McKeown:

“It is now propane based. This time of year, I like to normally put a furnace and a coil in, and we put the condenser in the spring. I am not really able to do that right now because come springtime I won’t be able to find those, what was the old 410A refrigerant. It is getting harder and harder to find that equipment. We can get it, it is not a problem, it just takes us a little bit of time right now. It is still so new with the new refrigerant, so don’t worry about somebody telling you that they can’t get it and you need to buy new equipment, there is generally a drop in or something we can do to prolong your old systems, but anything new coming up here, even in the next two months, is probably going to have the new refrigerant in it as far as air conditioning. No change in the furnaces.”

With the cold weather temperatures right around the corner, McKeown reminds homeowners to schedule those furnace service checks and to change filters.
