Hawk’s Tattoos in Galesburg is celebrating 46 years in business. Owner James Hawk says a lot has changed since he started tattooing back in 1980.

“Facial tattooing here was always so taboo. Celebrities tend to dictate the evolution of some of these things, but I see it in other countries where it’s totally acceptable. It’s part of the norm to have your scalp, face, that kind of thing done. The Samoan Islands, even that sees an evolution.”

Hawk adds that even with the evolution of tattooing, the personal meaning behind tattoos continues to be at the core of his work.
