Fighting Scots Open Conference Play Looking for First Win at Cornell

The Monmouth College Fighting Scots will look to break into the win column Saturday as they open Midwest Conference play on the road at Cornell College.

Monmouth fell to 0-2 last week after a 31-19 loss to Hampden-Sydney in Virginia. The Scots jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before the Tigers took a 24-7 advantage into halftime. Monmouth battled back in the second half, but three turnovers and several explosive plays proved costly.

Despite the 0-2 start, Head Coach Chad Braun says there is no doubt about what his team is capable of, but the Scots need to put together a complete four quarters.

Now the attention turns to Cornell, who enters at 1-1, as Monmouth begins its chase for another Midwest Conference championship.

Braun says the focus heading into Saturday is on getting back to playing Monmouth football.

“This week, it’s not about Cornell College, it’s about Monmouth College. We got to get better as a football team. We got to improve, we just got to focus on that. They got a nice ball club, really good quarterback, some really good skill kids. They run the ball very effectively. Defensively, they play the crush front, which is similar to what Wartburg runs, and they’ve been very good at it. They’re going to be difficult to play. Have to get up early in the morning on Saturday and travel there, coming off a long road trip. So we’re gonna find out a lot about our team Saturday.”

Monmouth has won 11 straight meetings against Cornell, but the last trip to Mount Vernon in 2024 was a battle, with the Scots having to rally for a 10-point win.

The Fighting Scots and Rams will kick things off at 1 PM Saturday in Mount Vernon, Iowa. We will have the broadcast on WRAM AM 1330, FM 95.7 and online at radiomonmouth.com, with the pregame show beginning at 12:30.
