For three decades, Stone-Hayes Center for Independent Living in Galesburg has been a voice for advocacy. According to Community Reintegration and Independent Living Advocate Sarah Nelson, this milestone will be celebrated Thursday, September 24th:
“Stone-Hayes is a non-profit organization, and we help people with disabilities of all ages. That is our main goal. We have core services, which are advocacy, home services, independent living skills, information and referrals, peer counseling, transitioning out of the nursing homes into their own apartments, and then we also do youth and family,” explains Nelson.
“We are going to celebrate our 30 years of advocacy. We have Ryan McGraw and Nick Boyle for guest speakers. They are going to focus on how to be independent. They will talk about how small groups can really impact and have a big voice,” Nelson adds.
Doors will open at 2 pm this Thursday at Stone-Hayes Center, located at 39 North Prairie Street. Presentations will take place between 2:30 and 4 pm, followed by an open house until 6 pm. The 30-Year Celebration is free and open to everyone.
