State lawmakers are getting a closer look at Governor JB Pritzker’s program to prevent and end homelessness. There are more than 120 thousand people experiencing homelessness in Illinois, and the goal of “Home Illinois” is to bring that down to zero said State Homeless Chief Christine Haley at a house committee hearing.
“This isn’t some pie in the sky that we can end homelessness someday. When we say end homelessness, that really means that we have a system that when people come into a homelessness situation, that there is a resource for them on the other side and that we are very quickly able to connect them to that said resource to stabilize their housing situation.”
The governor wants to see a 350 million dollar investment in the program, for things like street outreach, rental assistance, more shelter and permanent supportive housing and a new initiative to help homeless adults find and keep a job.
