One Dead Following Stabbing in Macomb

UPDATE- Homicide Investigation

On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at approximately 5:44 am, the Macomb Police Department responded to 1680 Wheeler Circle (Macomb) for a report of a male who had been stabbed. Officers arrived to the residence and observed the male victim, identified as Rickey L. Haymer (Male 27), lying on the floor with a stab wound. Officers immediately rendered medical aid. Fire Rescue and Life Guard Ambulance arrived on scene shortly after and performed life saving measures, while Macomb officers assisted. Haymer was transported to the McDonough District Hospital by ambulance, and was accompanied by a Macomb police officer. At approximately 6:55 am, Haymer was pronounced deceased at the McDonough District Hospital.

Macomb officers conducted a preliminary investigation and determined, Portia M. Garrison (Female 28) that she stabbed her husband, Haymer during a domestic altercation. Garrison was placed under arrest and transported to the McDonough County Jail for lodging. There were two children present inside the residence at the time of the incident, which the children were taken into protective custody. Detectives arrived on scene and began an investigation. Officers secured the McDonough District Hospital room for evidentiary purposes, where Haymer was treated prior to being pronounced deceased.

Garrison has been charged with First Degree Murder and remains lodged at the McDonough County Jail.

All subjects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This remains an active investigation and there is no active threat to the Macomb community or surrounding communities.

Investigators from the Illinois State Police- Zone 4 Investigations Division, Illinois State Police- Crime Scene Investigations Unit, McDonough County States Attorney’s Office, McDonough County Coroner’s Office, McDonough County Sheriff’s Office, Macomb Fire Department, Life Guard Ambulance, and the Western Illinois University Police Department assisted the Macomb Police Department with the investigation. Please note that our hearts go out to the family of the deceased, and everyone directly impacted by this tragic incident. Our department will continue to work tirelessly to investigate this matter and request your patience and cooperation in advance.
