CO Doctor Says Marijuana Users Need More Anesthesia

Share

Doctors are beginning to see links between the use of marijuana and a need to increase anesthesia during surgical procedures.  A doctor at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital says he’s been asking patients for years if they use the drug because he’s seen that it takes more anesthesia to keep them asleep during surgery.  He also says marijuana users require more pain medication after surgery to help them cope.  The doctor tells KDVR-TV that the connection between marijuana and anesthesia has not been extensively studied but should be.  He also hopes patients will overcome their fears about honestly answering questions about marijuana use so they can be treated fully and effectively when hospitalized.
