As the days are getting longer and the weather is warming up, more individuals and their families are hitting the roadways. Galesburg Police Chief Russ Idle offers driving safety as he says there are four main items that lead to injuries and deaths as the result of crashes:

“Distracted driving is one of them. Another one is speed. We ask everyone to just take a deep breath, slow down a little bit, you will get there and everyone will get there safely if you just slow down. Impaired driving. We tell people don’t use any substances or alcohol when you operate a car. Be sure that you are stone cold sober when you are operating a vehicle. The last one is occupant restraint. Wear your seatbelts. Put those kiddos in their child restraint seats, their booster seats, makes a huge different in the result of a crash. The number of injuries and the severity of injuries, whether or not you are properly restrained, so those seatbelts and those carseats or booster seats make a huge impact on safety.”

As for protecting your personal belongings, Chief Idle reminds area citizens to lock your houses, garages, sheds, and vehicles.
