Richard “Dick” Mack McCutcheon, 95, of Galesburg, died at 8:53 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2024, in OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born October 2, 1928, in Galesburg. He married Erma Allen. He later married Dona L. Durbin on October 19, 1963, in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on September 6, 1992.
He is survived by his children, Jeanie (Dannie) Pickel of Galesburg, Susie (Al) Vallero of Galesburg, Mark McCutcheon of Rock Island, Rick (Jen) McCutcheon of North Henderson, and Shawn (Ashley Wilson) McCutcheon of Alexis; seven grandchildren, John Pickel, Amanda Pickel-Thompson, Andy Vallero, Nikki Vallero, Logan McCutcheon, Meghan McCutcheon, and Emma McCutcheon; seven great grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille (Page) McCutcheon Goodman; a great granddaughter, Autumn Vallero; a sister, Mary Ellen Dutton; and a half-brother, Don Wilson.
He was a 1947 graduate of Galesburg High School. Before being drafted into the United States Army in 1951, Richard worked at Gale Products in Galesburg from 1947-1950 and in 1950 he owned and operated a Texaco Station which is now Gray’s Sandwich Shop today. After serving for 2 years, of which 6 months were overseas in the Korean War, he was honorably discharged in 1953, as a Sergeant and decorated war hero with a UN service medal and a Korean service medal. He then went to Butler Manufacturing before he finished his working career at Gates Rubber Company, where he worked for 29 years and 20 days, retiring in April 1991.
In his spare time, Richard enjoyed woodworking and was known for making birdhouses and decorative outhouses. He also enjoyed feeding the birds, reading and watching Westerns, watching crime shows, and drinking coffee, especially with his group at Hardee’s. Richard was a true family man. He loved helping his kids, family, and neighbors with anything they needed done.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, January 8, 2024, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Rollie Grauman officiating. Military honors will also be offered. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery.
