Entries are now being sought for the first annual Deputy Nick Weist Memorial Bags Tournament being sponsored by Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Spoon River Valley Lodge 427 Foundation and A-Town Baggers starting at noon on Sunday, May 5 at the American Legion in the Knox County community of Abingdon, Illinois.

“We encourage anyone who likes to have fun for a good cause to join us in Abingdon on May 5 as we remember one of our own who died in the line of duty,” said Lodge 427 President Donald “Ike” Hackett. “Nick Weist was always a familiar face at these types of events, and we want to honor his memory that day with good fellowship and friendly competition.”

The bags tournament entry fee is $50 per team and registration forms are available at www.foplodge427.com/events. Food and beverages will be available and prizes will be awarded to the winning teams. All proceeds support the Deputy Nick Weist Scholarship Fund.

Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy Nicholas Weist was killed in the line of duty on April 29, 2022 after he was struck by a car driven by a fleeing crime suspect.

The Fraternal Order of Police, founded in 1915, is the largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers in the United States. With a proud tradition of officers representing officers, the FOP is the most respected and most recognized police organization in the country. The Illinois FOP, chartered in 1963, is the second largest State Lodge, proudly representing more than 34,000 active duty and retired police officers – more than 10 percent of all FOP members nationwide.
