A 47-year-old New Jersey man is the first person known to have died from alpha-gal syndrome, a meat allergy caused by a tick bite. The man died September 2024 after eating a hamburger at a barbecue when he started feeling sick, complaining of stomach pain, vomiting and severe diarrhea. Hours later, he was dead on his bathroom floor. His death was initially a mystery, but a blood test this year revealed the allergic reaction that hadn’t shown up on his autopsy. The University of Virginia School of Medicine reported the man’s cause of death last week. He had bitten by several of the ticks on a family camping trip.
