November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about diabetes, promote prevention and encourage individuals to take steps toward better health. OSF HealthCare St. Mary Medical Center is recognizing this important month with a special “Save Your Soles” lunch and learn on Friday, November 7, from noon to 1 p.m. in Conference Room 1A, located at 3333 N. Seminary St., Galesburg.

The free community session will focus on preventive foot care for individuals living with diabetes, an essential part of managing the disease and avoiding complications. Attendees will learn:

  • Basic preventive foot care tips
  • How to choose proper footwear and socks
  • Brief nutrition and meal planning guidance

A complimentary diabetes-friendly meal will be provided, and the event is open to the public. Registration is encouraged by calling (309) 734-1408.

“Foot care is often overlooked in diabetes management, yet it’s one of the most critical areas of focus,” said Tina Canada, RN, diabetes educator with OSF HealthCare. “Even small injuries can become serious if left untreated, so education and early intervention are key.”

In addition to the lunch and learn, OSF HealthCare encourages everyone to take advantage of diabetes education resources, screenings and ongoing support available through local OSF facilities. Early detection and proactive management can make a significant difference in long-term health outcomes.
