The use of social media platforms have increased significantly over the years, wanting the state of Illinois to pass a platform fee, in their budget, that includes taxing social media companies that have a large amount of users, so they can provide their portion to the state. Here is State Senator, Mike Haplin, discussing more about the passed budget.
“One thing that I mentioned off air is that we’re really trying to get social media companies to have stake in the state. Right now, they provide what they think is a service, but as we all know the negative social effects that we’re seeing, especially in young kids, and we think it’s time for them to start contributing to the benefit of our state. So, it’s not a tax on users, but it’s a platform fee for social media companies that have the Facebook’s, the Tiktok’s in the world that have this large amount of users.”
