Daniel Lester “Les” Shane, 80, of Galesburg, passed away peacefully at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at his home.

Les was born May 21, 1946, in Galesburg, the son of Walter F. and Anna Gladys (Deane) Shane. He graduated from Galesburg High School and soon after enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served his country for 21 years, including during the Vietnam War.

Following his military retirement, Les worked for many years in the maintenance department at Bridgeway. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) and the Treo Naval Retirement Group.

Les married Idelle (Flinn) Butler on September 20, 1997, in Galesburg, and she survives.

He is also survived by his daughter, Debbie (Joe) Schaefer of Aurora; bonus children, Kerry (the late Shawn) Gravelle of Bloomington, and Travis Butler of Lenexa, Kansas; and Kerry’s children, Amanda and Adam. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, David Shane, in 1987; and his sisters, Evelyn Bahl and Mary Severns.

Les had a genuine passion for cooking and especially enjoyed sharing his creations with family. He loved trying new recipes and was always excited about the latest cooking appliance or gadget. His generosity, sense of humor, and enjoyment of family time will be fondly remembered by those who knew and loved him.

In keeping with Les’s wishes, cremation will take place and no services are planned. Memorials may be made to his family to establish a memorial fund in his name.

Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be offered at www.h-p-w.com.
