There is still plenty of time to take advantage of the weather outside and fire up the grill. Monmouth Fire Chief Casey Rexroat offers these reminders when enjoying your outdoor grilling:
“When you are grilling, keep that grill a little bit of distance from your house. Try to keep it out from underneath porch roofs. Don’t start the gas grills with the lid closed, the gas could build up inside of that grill and when it finally takes off, it could cause an explosion. Same with lighter fluid, be very careful of how much lighter fluid you use and keep it out of the hands of the kids,” Chief Rexroat states.
“If you are grilling with a propane grill and you smell gas, that is probably wrong. The gas should be burning up. Make sure you shut it off. Whenever you are done with that grill, make sure you not only shut the burners off, but you also reach down and shut that propane tank off and keep the gas from getting anywhere,” adds Chief Rexroat.
When it comes to camping, Chief Rexroat says to use a fire-retardant tent, pick a safe location from water or trees, be weather aware, turn off any propane lanterns or grills no longer being used, and put out that campfire before going to sleep.
