A variety of conditions can be treated through physical therapy, with post-surgical recovery being one of the most common. Advanced Rehab and Sports Medicine Clinic Manager Doug Price explains that, in some cases, patients may receive physical therapy before their scheduled surgery:
“If you have to have any kind of orthopedic surgery, obviously if you have had your hip replaced, your knee replaced, ankle surgery, shoulder surgery, a rotator cuff repair, a shoulder replaced, had back surgery; we are going to probably see you after that surgery or you need to. A lot of people are doing prehab as well too. So, they are coming for physical therapy before the surgery because the doctors are realizing that the muscles need to get strong to support the new joint being put in. If you are having a knee replaced or a hip replaced, don’t be surprised if your doctor doesn’t send you for a little bit of prehab prior to your surgery.”
National Physical Therapy Month is celebrated each October.
