Callers are falsely claiming that a juvenile family member has been kidnapped. The caller may claim to be associated with a cartel, demand money, direct the recipient to a local Walmart, or repeatedly change the meeting location before instructing the recipient to purchase a prepaid card. A distressed voice may also be heard during the call.
The family members involved in the reported incidents were independently located and confirmed safe.
Do not send money, purchase prepaid cards, or meet the caller.
Contact your loved one directly.
Report the call to law enforcement immediately.
