Stephen P. “Steve” Fordyce, 72, of Abingdon, died at 4:58 p.m. Friday, February 24, 2023, at home.

He was born December 13, 1950, in Galesburg, the son of Morris and Doris E. (Daily) Fordyce.  He married Anita (Dykeman) Sloan.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Fordyce; a daughter, Lianna (Tom) Mastin; two grandchildren, Addison and James Dalton Ita; two brothers, Jerry Fordyce and Rod (Julie) Fordyce, both of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Linda Fordyce Frazier; and a sister-in-law, Jan Fordyce.

Steve was raised and educated in Abingdon, where he played football for Abingdon High School before graduating in 1969.  Steve was always a hard worker.  He was a lifelong mechanic who could often be found fixing things.  He had a large garage where he could usually be found tinkering.  He had worked for United Facilities, Ag Industrial Millwrights, and McMahon Brothers Farming.  In earlier years, he was involved with a Demo Derby group, mainly as the mechanic.  Steve also enjoyed working in his yard and he loved his grandchildren.

He served in the United States Army for two years and was stationed in Alaska. Cremation will be accorded.  Graveside service with Military Honors will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2023 in the Abingdon Cemetery.  To further celebrate his life, friends and family are invited to the Abingdon American Legion on Saturday, March 11, 2023 from noon to 3 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Compassus or the Gary Sinise Foundation.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services is honored to serve the family.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com
