At the October West Central Board of Education meeting, the lone action item was approval of purchasing a Health Life Safety Bond, which are issued to fund critical repairs or safety upgrades within the district, explains Superintendent Stacey Day:

“Every ten years, school districts have to go through a health life safety survey, where your architect comes in, checks your buildings and facilities, and then creates a list of things to keep you safe, secure, up to code. Then in order to do that work, typically almost every school district, especially those of us that are small, take out Health Life Safety Bonds, which is basically a loan in order to pay to do that work. We worked with Stifel, who is our underwriter to go through that process,” informs Day.

“This past Wednesday, the Board approved purchasing just shy of about $8 million in Health Life Safety Bonds for us to be able to do the work. We have a high school roof we need to do, we have some additional window work at the high school we need to finish up, windows at the middle school, some boiler work at the middle school, our elementary exterior doors are on the list, and one of our big projects that we are hoping to do this summer is a new playground for our elementary school,” Day adds.

This Wednesday, October 22nd at 6 pm in the West Central Elementary Library, the Board of Education Building and Grounds Committee Members and the District Architect are hosting a local contractor informational meeting where those interested can hear about these upcoming projects, learn about the bid process, timelines, bonding process and requirements, and insurance needs in order to complete work at a school.
