Hill Inmate Sentenced to 12 years IDOC for Staff Assault

On August 30, 2023, a former inmate of Hill Correctional Center was sentenced to twelve years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for assaulting a correctional officer.

During a bench trial held on June 26th, the Knox County State’s Attorney’s Office presented compelling evidence that William Brown assaulted a correctional officer while she was performing her duties within a housing wing on June 19, 2022. Brown forcefully grabbed the officer, causing her to be thrown to the ground. Fortunately, another inmate intervened, positioning himself between Brown and the officer, allowing her to exit the housing wing and seek assistance. Circuit Judge Andrew Doyle found Brown guilty of Aggravated Battery.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge Doyle announced that Brown’s conviction was for a Class Two felony, typically carrying a sentencing range of three to seven additional years in the Department of Corrections. Considering Brown’s two prior convictions for assaulting prison staff and a victim impact statement read during the hearing, the judge found Brown eligible for an extended term sentence, with a maximum of 14 years. After careful consideration of the evidence, Judge Doyle imposed a twelve-year sentence.

The prosecution was led by Knox County State’s Attorney Jeremy Karlin.
