Albert “Abby” F. Holmes, Jr., 62, of Galesburg passed away Friday, February 9, 2024.

Born November 8, 1961 to Shirley Jean Foster and Albert F. Holmes, Sr. in Galesburg. He was reared and educated in Galesburg. Abby joined the United States Navy in 1979. He worked at Roger Bros for several years. Abby was also very involved at the Knox County Fairgrounds; he assisted in building the track and kept up with the maintenance of it. Lastly, Abby worked for New Age Siding and Windows as a roofer for several years.

Survived by ex-wife and friend, Lori Holmes; four children: Tiffany Holmes of Moline, Illinois, Ryan Holmes (Carissa) of Knoxville, Illinois, Andrew Holmes (Danielle) of Galesburg, and Heather Holmes (Craig) of Galesburg; fourteen grandchildren: Andres, Ariana, Matthew, Kaitlyn, Kaleia, Zayne, Ayden, Payton, Bryson, Braxton, Jaden, Joziah, Cejay, and Citi. Also surviving are three sisters: Jodi Holmes (Dallas Angelo) of Oklahoma, Roberta (Dan) Kroupa of Kansas, and Rosanne Carter of Texas; and lots of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Patricia Deets; and two brothers: Casey Barnhill and Michael Restus.

Abby loved his family, especially his grandkids. His greatest joy in life was being a Paw-Paw. Abby enjoyed playing pool, playing the guitar, and tending to things that needed fixed. He also liked working on cars. Abby was of the Christian faith.

Cremation will be accorded. Private family services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to any organization meant for recovering addicts. Family has requested no memorial contributions be given to Salvation Army in his name. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.watsonthomas.com.
