Brody Lenington of Cedar Vale-Dexter High School (KS) won the 2024 USA High School Clay Target League National Championship Individual crown on Sunday, July 14th in Mason, Michigan. Lenington edged out a field of over 1,800 registered other high school students vying for the title of National Champion. Lenington shot a perfect 100-straight, and then survived a shoot-off with 14 other athletes that also shot perfect scores in the final day’s competition.
Madelyn Coats of Franklin-Waverly High School (IL) claimed the title of the top high schhool female clay target shooter in the nation.
Oregon’s Yamhill-Carlton High School won the team title in the event, coming out ahead of 259 other high school clay target teams with a score of 487 out of 500.
As far as Illinois high school teams competing, the top teams included Mt. Pulaski took 2nd in the team finals. Locally, Mendon Unity was 52nd and Canton placed 77th.
Several shooters from Abingdon-Avon High School took part. Zylur Combs was the lone finalist after shooting a 99 in the preliminary round for the 19th best score of the day. He ended the weekend by placing 369th in the finals on Sunday, shooting a 90. A-town’s Morgan Tracey was 99th out of 257 females in the preliminaries.
West Central’s Jacob Morris placed 733rd out of 1734 total participants. Athletes & teams representing 456 high schools from across the nation participated during the weekend.
