Two Macomb Officers Shot Serving Warrant *Update 5:10pm 9/5/24 *Suspect now in custody

After extensive negotiations with the suspect over the past 20 hours, at approximately 2:10 p.m. the suspect peacefully surrendered to officers. The suspect, Shaiking M. Mathis, a 38 year-old male of the 300 block of North Normal Street, Macomb, was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the McDonough County Jail. Mathis has been charged with four counts of aggravated battery to a police officer and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm. Additional charges are pending.

At approximately 6:44PM on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, officers from the Macomb Police Department attempted to serve a search warrant in the 300 block of North Normal Street. Upon announcing their presence multiple times prior to entering the property, two Macomb police officers were shot by a suspect in the residence. Both officers were transported to area hospitals and then transferred to a trauma center in Peoria. Both officers are recovering at home, and are expected to make a full recovery.

The Macomb Police Department wants to express their relief that this incident came to a peaceful conclusion and there were no further injuries. We also would like to thank the community for their patience, understanding, support, and generosity as this incident impacted many aspects of our daily lives here in Macomb.

We’d also like to thank our law enforcement partners for their assistance in this incident. The efforts of the Illinois State Police, the McDonough County Sherriff’s Office, and the many other officers who assisted on scene and with our officers at the hospital are sincerely appreciated. Chief Hamer would also like to express his extreme gratitude to the men and women of the Macomb Police Department. The professionalism and bravery they displayed during this entire incident and their dedication to the citizens of Macomb is to be commended.

The use of force investigation is being conducted by the Illinois State Police and all questions related to the investigation should be directed to them.

*** PRESS RELEASE FROM KNOX COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE****

On Wednesday September 4th at 6:44 P.M, Knox County Sheriff’s Office along with Galesburg Police Department were notified of two Macomb Police Department Officers that had been shot while attempting to execute a search warrant in the 300 block of North Normal Street in Macomb.

Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Galesburg Police Department immediately began deploying mutual aid and rendered assistance to the scene. Sheriff Harlan and Chief Russ Idle responded to the scene and provided assistance to the Emergency Operations Center.

Resources from Galesburg and Knox County included 20 Law Enforcement Officers, Galesburg Police Department Drone Team, Galesburg-Knox County Strategic Response Team, Mobile Command Center, and a Tactical Rescue Vehicle.

Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Illinois State Police also responded to OSF in Peoria to provide assistance with the wounded officers arriving at the hospital.

Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Galesburg Police Department worked side by side with Illinois State Police, US Marshalls, and the agents from the FBI to assist Macomb with additional resources on the critical incident. Mutual aid was also provided by several other surrounding counties and cities.

After a 19 hour standoff the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

We would like to thank all those involved for a peaceful outcome to a tragic situation and remind everyone to keep the officers involved and their families in their prayers.

The operation is an example of Law Enforcement working together providing assistance to each other and assisting with keeping the community safe during a critical incident.

The suspect at the 300 block of North Normal has been taken into custody without incident. The scene is still secure and being processed.

***Update 10:10am 9/5/24 ***

MACOMB, IL – This is an ongoing active incident
At approximately 6:44PM on Wednesday, September 4 Macomb Police arrived to the 300 block
of North Normal Street to serve a search warrant. Upon announcing their presence and entering
the property, two Macomb police officers were shot by a subject in the residence. Both officers
were treated at McDonough District Hospital and transferred to a trauma center in Peoria for
additional treatment. Both officers are in stable condition and one has been discharged to
continue recovery at home.
One subject located outside the house was detained, identified, and released by the Macomb
Police Department. A suspect remains barricaded at the residence. Officers from the
McDonough County Sherriff’s Department and surrounding counties responded to support
Macomb Police Department in securing the area and managing the situation. The Illinois State
Police SWAT team, ISP Crisis Negotiations Team, along with assistance from local and regional
law enforcement, continue to work on the investigation.
Law enforcement remains on the scene. The incident is isolated to the 300 block of North
Normal Street; please avoid the area. There is no other active threat to the community at this
time. Out of an abundance of caution, Western Illinois University and Wesley Day Care has
closed their campuses on Thursday, September 5.
Pursuant to department policy, the tactical operation and ongoing investigation has been turned
over to the Illinois State Police. Further updates from the Macomb Police Department will be
coordinated with the Illinois State Police.
