On January 4, 2026, deputies with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded to a well-being call at a residence in Knox County after information was received indicating the male subject occupying the residence had allegedly shot and killed his dog the previous day and was believed to be in possession of firearms despite being a previously convicted felon.
Following an on-scene investigation and subsequent follow-up investigation, a search warrant was obtained and executed at the residence. During the execution of the warrant, multiple firearms, a deceased dog, and items of drug paraphernalia were located and seized. The male subject was taken into custody without incident.
ARRESTED – JON P. BENSON
W/M, 50, of Wataga, Illinois
As a result of the investigation, Jon P. Benson was arrested by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following offenses:
• Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon (5 counts)
• Reckless Discharge of a Firearm
• Disorderly Conduct
• Violation of the Humane Care for Animals Act
Benson was transported to the Knox County Jail, where he was processed in accordance with standard procedures.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
