Labor Day weekend is traditionally a busy time for regional road trips as many families and travelers look to take one final getaway before fall schedules fully settle in. Before heading out, AAA urges drivers to make sure their vehicles are ready for the journey.
The reminder comes after nearly 405,000 drivers required roadside assistance during last year’s Labor Day holiday travel period. The most common calls involved towing, battery-related issues and flat tires.
“The most common roadside problems we see during holiday weekends are often the ones drivers can prevent,” said Molly Hart, spokesperson for AAA โ The Auto Club Group. “Checking your vehicle before a trip may not be the most exciting part of travel planning, but it can help you avoid unexpected delays, costly repairs, and time spent on the roadside.”
What Should Drivers Check Before a Labor Day Road Trip?
- Battery
Summer heat can shorten battery life and weaken performance. Drivers should have their battery tested if it’s more than a few years old or showing signs of trouble, such as slow engine starts. - Tires
Inspect tires for proper inflation and adequate tread depth. Underinflated or worn tires can increase the risk of a blowout, reduce fuel efficiency and affect vehicle handling. Don’t forget to check the spare tire. - Brakes
Pay attention to squealing, grinding or vibrations when braking. These warning signs may indicate that service is needed before a long trip. - Fluids
Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid and windshield washer fluid. Proper fluid levels help keep vehicles operating safely and efficiently. - Lights and Wiper Blades
Confirm that headlights, brake lights and turn signals are functioning properly. Replace worn wiper blades to help maintain visibility during unexpected rain. - Emergency Supplies
Pack an emergency kit that includes drinking water, a flashlight, phone charging cables, basic first-aid supplies and other essentials that could prove helpful during an unexpected delay.
Drivers are also encouraged to download AAAโs mobile app, which allows members to request roadside assistance, compare gas prices, and find discounts along their route.
