This evening, at Spoon river valley FOP business meeting Lieutenant Carl Kraemer, Sergeant Jermey Moore, Deputy Andrew “AJ” Avery, Deputy Timothy Goodman, Deputy Cody Easley, Deputy James Thorp, and Deputy Keith King were recognized by President Donald Ike Hackett and the Faternal Order of Police (FOP) with Life-Saving Awards for their extraordinary actions on January 1st, 2026. These awards represent more than a commendation they recognize courage, selflessness, and a willingness to put oneself in harm’s way to protect others. Their actions that day exemplified the very best of the law enforcement profession and brought great credit to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois.
On January 1st, 2026 these deputies responded to Bluebell Towers in City of Abingdon, IL after a fire alarm was reported. Upon arrival, they encountered heavy smoke throughout the second floor of the six-story apartment building and immediately joined the emergency response to evacuate residents. Working together under hazardous conditions, they helped safely remove 53 residents from danger, including children, individuals confined to wheelchairs, and residents with physical disabilities requiring additional assistance. Their courage, teamwork, and quick actions were instrumental in the successful evacuation and helped prevent what could have been a tragic loss of life.
Tonight, Knox County and the FOP honors seven deputies who ran toward danger when others were trying to escape it. Thank you for your courage, your service, and your unwavering commitment to protecting the lives of those you serve. We are proud of you.
