A boil order remains in effect for portions of Monmouth following a catastrophic water main break at North 6th Street and Highway 34 over the weekend. Another water main break occurred overnight, and Operations Director Ken Helms says the boil order will remain in effect until water samples return clean results:
“We are working at putting a new line in there. The housing on East Girard from the water plant to 6th Street and then the apartments that are there on North 6th Street, plus the American Legion, County Market, and a couple of other small businesses that are there. We were hoping to get the boil order pulled today [Tuesday, October 6th], but it is not going to be pulled. We had another main break in that area and we had to shut water down to do a repair there. This water main is one of the biggest ones that we have in Monmouth. It is a 12 inch, so it flows very, very strong. In order for us to do repairs or even patches to it, we basically have to power down,” informs Helms.
“Any time there is a loss of pressure below 20 psi, we have to initiate a boil order. Since we had another failure throughout the night, we are going to extend it for at least another 24 hours, until we get clean results. When we do get clean results we will notify everybody,” Helms adds.
