Elizabeth Irene Underwood, 87, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 7:25 a.m., Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Roseville Healthcare and Rehab, Roseville, IL. She was born January 29, 1935 in Avon, IL, the daughter of Charles Lee and Nellie Elizabeth (Blancherd) Yocum. She was raised and educated in Prairie City, IL.

She married Davy (David) Lee Underwood in Prairie City on November 23, 1950 and he preceded her in death on March 2, 1993.

Irene worked at the Iowa Ordinance Plant, for 10 years at Western Stoneware and at Lincoln School, Monmouth, in the lunch room. She and her husband made pony swings out of rubber tires and traveled to sell them. She was a member of the Galesburg Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles, playing card and board games and crocheting. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family, especially her grandbabies.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Harry (Sue) Underwood of Smithshire, IL, James (Debbie) Underwood of Monmouth, Estelle Rose Mettler of Republic, MO, Catherine Stough of Kirkwood, IL, Cheryl (Jim) Turley of Galesburg, IL, Cindy (Glenn) Vancil of Roseville, IL, Becky Taylor of Cameron, IL and Elizabeth (Betty) Ann (Darrel) Cain of San Antonio, TX and daughter-in-law Mayette Underwood of McRae, AR. 17 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Kevin Underwood, sons-in-law Ted Mettler, Michael Davis and Harold Taylor, one great-grandson, Dallas Root, 6 brothers and 6 sisters.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A Memorial Talk will be given at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Kingdom Hall, 201 N Linwood Rd, Galesburg, IL. A service of remembrance will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2023 at the Roseville American Legion, Roseville, IL. Interment will be in the Good Hope Cemetery, Good Hope, IL, at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Fund, 11921 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852.
