House Committee Passes Bill Banning Cat Declawing

Share

Legislation passed by a house committee on Tuesday makes it illegal to get your cat declawed. Unless a veterinarian deems declawing is necessary for the cat’s health, the practice would be banned under the bill. Violators face fines of at least 500 dollars. It’s sponsored by Representative Barbara Hernandez of Aurora.

“Many individuals just want it because of fear of damaging furniture or just don’t want to keep up with the cat’s claws, cutting them. Many people go and get this procedure that amputates pretty much up to their knuckle. It is really hurtful. It can damage the behavior of the animal as well.”

Opponents say this isn’t needed since declawing isn’t done that much anymore and that cats that have been declawed are less likely to be adopted from shelters.
