An outstanding freshman campaign has netted Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball player Elly Bentley a spot on the All-Region IV Division II District A Second Team.

Bentley, a 5-foot-3 point guard from Limestone, was voted to the team by district coaches after leading the Chargers in scoring, assists and steals during the regular season.

Bentley started all 30 regular season games for Sandburg and averaged 18.0 points per contest while shooting 40.4 percent (219 of 542) from the field. She also led the Chargers with a 74.2 percent (98 of 132) mark at the foul line, averaged 3.9 assists per game and picked up 1.4 steals per contest. Bentley finished fourth on the team with 4.8 rebounds per game.

The freshman hit double figures in points in all but four contests during the regular season and had 11 occasions with at least 20 points. She scored a season-high 32 on 15-of-20 shooting in Sandburg’s Nov. 28 victory at Southeastern. Bentley closed the regular season Saturday at Lincoln Trail by recording her first collegiate double-double, putting up 28 points and a season-best 10 assists.

Bentley opened the postseason by scoring a game-high 23 in the Chargers’ 75-57 win over Elgin on Monday night. She and the Chargers will play in the District B tournament quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Morton.
