With the summer heat and humidity making its way into the local forecast, Knox County Humane Society Director Erin Buckmaster reminds pet owners of caring for their animals in this heat:
“It is dangerous for those pets that are left out. We have to make sure that when you put them out just for potty breaks that you don’t forget about them out there. Give them plenty of water and shade if possible. In the heat of the summer, when you have your dogs in the car, that sun is beating in, that car can get pretty hot. If you take your dog along for a ride in the car, make sure that you don’t leave them in there.”
Additional tips in keeping your pets safe this summer, never leave them unattended around a pool, make sure windows and doors are secured tightly, use caution when walking on hot asphalt, use caution when using herbicides, be mindful of what you are planting in your yard, and identify signs of overheating, excessive panting, difficulty breathing, weakness, and drooling.
