2025 marks 40 years of the American Cancer Society. Local Senior Development Manager Stacey Dutton shares the mission and impact over the years:
“The American Cancer Society started in 1985. It started in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Gordy Klatt was the oncology surgeon and by the time he saw the patients for their treatment or for their surgery, it was too late. So, he was determined to walk and raise awareness. He ended up raising some money. He walked for 24 hours and raised $27,000 all by himself. He had people stopping by and taking care of him and making sure he was doing everything he should to continue. Since then, we are up to about 1,800 Relay for Life events across the nation. We have many that are international. When we say everybody is touched by cancer, it doesn’t matter where you live. Relay for Life is a great way to give back.”
On Monday, August 11st, the Warren-Henderson Relay for Life will host their main event at Alfano’s Pizza in Monmouth beginning at 5 pm. Weather permitting, the luminaria celebration will be held on the square in Downtown Monmouth.
