Each year, letter carriers across the country head out on their routes the second Saturday in May to collect donations of non-perishable food items to benefit local food pantries. This Saturday, May 9th is the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Local United States Postal Service Letter Carrier Amanda Schneider explains how to get involved:
“We will have a drop off on Friday at County Market. We also have a bin set up at the Post Office in the lobby when you come in, but traditionally we have it where the letter carriers grab it from the mailbox. Just put your non-perishables by the mailbox and your friendly mail carrier will grab those on Saturday,” shares Schneider.
“We usually have people walk with us and also drive, collecting the food for us to help the load. We also have Fareway who will be setting up Stamp Out Hunger food bags in five and ten dollar increments, so you can also donate that way. Also, usually into the next week we will still collect at the various locations,” Schneider adds.
Donations locally benefit the Jamieson Community Center Food Pantry. According to Schneider, 3,000 pound of food was collected last year during the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Monmouth.
