With credit and debit cards being utilized more often than cash when making payments, scammers have turned to using skimming devices to try and gain personal information. Monmouth Police Department Investigator Josh Kramer explains what to look for on the machines during point of sales:
“Make sure when you are putting your debit cards in at the payment on the pump or even in the store that there is not an overlay device. The overlay device is just a piece that sits over the credit card reader that you swipe your card at a gas station or wherever. It is just a matter of literally putting your hand on top of it and lifting up. If there is an overlay device on there, it is going to come up. They are not really stuck on.”
If you come across a skimming device, let that business know immediately, or contact local authorities so they can begin investigating the suspicious activity.
