With the Extreme Cold Warning in place by the National Weather Service for the local area through noon on Friday, January 23rd, followed by a Cold Weather Advisory through noon on Saturday, January 24th for the dangerously cold wind chills, Advanced Plumbing and Mechanical Owner Zach Johnson offers tips to prevent pipe freeze ups in your homes:
“It is going to be cold and if your house is maybe one of those houses that potentially has some pipes that are freezing up, I would keep the faucets running, turn the heat up a little bit more than maybe you normally would. If you see any gaps or cracks in your foundation, if you can see daylight, then air is going to get in there and cause some problems. Definitely cheaper to maybe keep a little bit of water moving than it is to have a pipe break. Just do what you can to prevent it before it happens. It really doesn’t take too much, just a small steady stream and you want to make sure that you are getting the hot and the cold if they are both right there and could freeze, so keep an eye on those things and keep them protected.”
Also, during these extreme cold temperatures, ensure portable heaters are being used properly, do not use generators or grills indoors, check on older family, friends, and neighbors, and keep pets indoors as much as possible.
