In the latest statistics report from the American Cancer Society, 70 percent of those diagnosed with cancer are past the diagnosis of five years, reports local Senior Development Manager Stacey Dutton:

“That survival rate five years plus. A lot of them hit that five-year mark or they could be ten years, but there are more people on the other side of five years survivorship and that is what we love. Early detection helps with that of course,” says Dutton.

“Some survival gains have been moving forward in a couple of cancers, just to give you an idea; myeloma rose from 32 percent to 62 percent, liver cancer from 7 percent to 22 percent, lung cancer is 15 percent to 28 percent, melanoma is 16 percent to 35 percent, and rectal cancer is 8 percent to 18 percent in that five year survival rate. Overall, with metastatic cancer, those that spread or return, all cancers combined, it went from 17 percent to 35 percent,” Dutton adds.

Dutton states that lung cancer was listed as the top killer across all genders and races.
